So here I am, reading things on the internets, when I come upon this excerpt from one of Richard Dawkins’ documentaries, “Enemies of Reason”. In this excerpt, Dawkins interviews famed doctor Deepak Chopra, who claims to use quantum mechanics medicinally. You may remember from my previous post, where I explain how quantum mechanics and spirituality are mutually exclusive, lest you choose to deify Erwin Schrodinger. Anyway, the point I want to make here is that this is exactly the kind of thing I was talking about. People, famous people, famous people with advanced degrees, will take science, distort it, twist it, and manipulate it to their own ends without any regard for what it actually says. When confronted, they’ll engage in doublespeak that would make George Orwell bleed from the ears. So don’t take my word for it, just watch.

Richard Feynman is by far one of my favorite physicists. He not only revolutionized high energy physics, but revolutionized the way physics is taught. As my boyfriend says, the field of physics has a collective hard-on for the man. I agree. As my (belated) Christmas present to you, here is Richard Feynman describing is views of doubt, uncertainty, and religion.

I’ll be back later this week with a nice long post on unfair generalization, that I thought up while spending a week in Missouri with a friend of mine and her conservative Christian family. I guarantee it won’t be what you expect.

I’ve noticed that everyone seems to be pointing fingers at the Christian community for being a bunch of I will tactfully refer to as “a raucus pile of bigoted fuckheads”. Conservative Jews are just as bad. As evidence, watch this video. This is a video of a conservative rabbi explaining how even civil unions are an abomination, but you can’t say anything about it because he’s just expressing his religious freedom. Check it out.

Christians Don’t Want You To Hug

In an attempt to further sexually repress everyone for every reason, Christian youth groups have started a campaign to prevent people from taking part in sinful “front-hugs”, preferring you to take part in a Christian Side-Hug. You know, a side hug. That thing that makes you look like a tool.

As we all know, face to face embraces run the horrific risk of a clothed crotch graze. The Christian Side-Hug (or the CSH, as the kids call it) rids us of sin, as the only below the belt contact will be some good old-fashioned hip on hip action.

This has taken a new step towards insanity, in my mind. It’s one thing to tell kids not to have sex. While I disagree with the point, I can at least understand the argument But when you get to the point when you’re telling people that if they make bodily contact at all, they have to do it in the form of a fucking “side-hug”, you’re screwing these kids up so bad that by the time they grow up, they’ll be so sexually confused and naive that they’ll be, for lack of a better word, fucked.

And just to make it even more ridiculous, they even made a rap video explaining why you shouldn’t hug, because “front-hugs” are sinful, as is kissing. I’m not kidding here, people. Here’s the video.

I was able to get through 1:23 of it. If you can get through the whole thing, I will personally congratulate you. Assuming you survive.

This Just In: The LHC Is Not Destroying the Universe

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has been running for several days now, and has yet to produce a microscopic black hole that will destroy the Earth. It has yet to rip the universe a new one, and has yet to do anything interesting. It will not destroy the universe today, tomorrow, or ever. Sorry to panic you, but if you want to see the world end, you’ll have to wait until 2012.

Kiva Atheists Have Raised More Than Any Other Group

Kiva is a charitable organization that lets people give small loans to entrepreneurs around the world. As of October 4, 2009, Kiva has distributed $95,136,910 in loans from 568,810 lenders. A total of 135,613 loans have been funded. The average loan size is $406.45. Its current repayment rate is 98.42% [Wikipedia]. As of today, the largest community on Kiva is the Atheists, Agnostics, Skeptics, Freethinkers, Secular Humanists and the Non-Religious group which has raised, as of today, a total of $1,168,650.00. The next largest group is the Kiva Christians, which have raised $727,000. I’m not trying to spark a competition, but I’d like to make a point. Morality, charity, and compassion are not attributes that the religious community, or any community for that matter, can monopolize. The Atheist group gives, in their own words, because “we care about the suffering of human beings”.

I would encourage all of our readers to do what they can, not because of any desire to be competetive and to beat out the Christian group (though I won’t deny that was one of my motivations for joining), but to show people that people can still be good, moral people without living in fear of eternal punishment and hellfire. I know I don’t.

P.S. I’m sorry I was gone for so long. School stuff got a bit busy. I’ll be posting more often in the coming days and weeks.
